A Guide to Wood Science
The study of wood as a renewable material and organic material is what is known as wood science. The processes and the tools used to utilize the material is what is known as wood technology. Other products are put alongside wood for easy testing and study. The comparison made against other products will include the features of the material against those of wood, the value and the ease it can be worked on. The utilization of technology gives wood an upper hand in most of this comparison. Some of these advantages include wood being a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of products. It is also based on renewable resources. The other merit is that a part of the harvested material is at the same time used as energy to produce the product.
Protection of wooden structure and products is a must if you want to keep the good looks in place. The biggest threat to wood being moisture and insects has to be kept away from the wood. The moisture courses the timber to decay and the insects eat through the wood. There are many ways timber is treated among them being the ACQ in other words alkaline copper Quaternary. As the name implies the preservative is made of copper products. As effective as this preservative, it has some downside to its use. The chemical is highly corrosive to most metals, the chemical corrodes away galvanized fasteners and therefore only stainless steel is used. The saturation level of any treatment will depend on where the wood is going to be used and the species of the wood. The concentration level of the chemical will be different for two pieces of wood where one is used above ground and the other close to a water body.
Many methods are being invented to protect the wood, and one of them is the copper metal method. This method is being accepted fast because is friendly to wooden fasteners. An alternative name to be given to this method is the micronized copper wood preservative method. In this process microscopic particles of solid copper metal are mixed in a liquid carrier and injected to the wood at high pressure. The process eliminates the need to dissolve the copper as is done in earlier copper-based preservatives. When this process is used to treat timber the timber properties are increased highly. The wood products protected using this method last longer.
Termites cannot eat through timber treated through this method. It is not corrosive to metals used in together with the product. When you use this method to treat wood, then you will not need to worry for at least ten years.
